The gambling world can sometimes produce really off-the-wall stories. Every month there are plenty of cases of individuals going to extreme lengths to pay back debts, or of simply bizarre behavior at casino properties around the globe. It can be entertaining and sometimes sad.

May was no exception, as there was plenty that happened in the casino world.

Here’s a look at some of the most colorful and/or noteworthy from the month that was.

Man Loses Big At Casino; Loses Bigger After Rendezvous With Woman

After a night of gambling and a rendezvous with a young woman he took home from the casino, a Deerfield Beach welder suffered a $55,000 double-doozy loss, according to a sheriff’s office incident report. Guy Paul, 52, was gambling in the High Limit Room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood when an orange-haired woman wearing a leopard-print dress caught his eye, the report said. When Paul’s gambling losses peaked at $25,000, he called it quits about 4 a.m. and invited the woman to his home, the report said. Once there they had sex, he paid her and they went to sleep, according to the report. When Paul awoke about two hours later, “Dana” was gone and so was five years’ worth of savings — $30,000 cash in $100 bills was missing from a bedroom dresser drawer.

Alleged Mastermind Of $1.4M Casino Fraud Dead

A Laotian businessman who was facing a joint charge of colluding with 13 others to cheat the casino at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) has died, a court heard. Sengmanivong Soum’s lawyer Shashi Nathan told the court that the 53-year-old died, apparently from a heart attack, some time at the end of last month. Sengmanivong, the alleged mastermind of the syndicate, had been accused of colluding with 13 Thai nationals and other unidentified persons in a fraudulent scheme to obtain cash chips from a game of baccarat at the casino between May 6 and 7 in 2013.

Celebrity Poker Players See Their Limo Stolen

Police have recovered the limousine that was stolen from outside a restaurant in Geelong (Australia), after a group of celebrity poker players were left without a lift to their charity poker match. The car was found (damaged) about 9 p.m. after it was taken from Fisherman’s Pier restaurant a few hours earlier at 6.30 p.m., where the group, including AFL star Brendan Fevola and his wife Alex, were dining before the match. The group were then left without lifts to The Sphinx hotel to compete in the All in for Charity tournament, hosted by former World Series of Poker winner Joe Hachem, alongside former cricketer Shane Warne.

Legendary Sports Gambler Billy Walters Indicted For Insider Trading

Legendary Las Vegas sports gambler Billy Walters was indicted by the federal government in New York for an alleged insider trading scheme that involved golfer Phil Mickelson and a gambling debt between them. Walters, 69, is accused of obtaining nonpublic information from Thomas Davis, the former chairman of Dean Foods Co., that benefited Walters to the tune of $110 million. Walters allegedly bought and sold stock of the company with the insider information.

Major Vegas Bookmaker Accused Of Underpaying On Winning Bets For Years

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has filed a complaint against one of the state’s leading bookmakers, alleging that the company shortchanged gamblers between 2011 and 2015—and knew it was happening. CG Technology is accused underpaying about $700,000 on more than 20,000 winning parlay bets during the period. The complaint also says that it overpaid $100,000 on 11,000 parlays. According to the complaint, CG Technology could stand to lose its license because regulators warned in 2014, after the company paid a $5.5 million fine for one of its then executives facilitating illegal bets, that “any future complaints could result in license revocation.”

Irish Gambler Wins $17.4 Million In 72-Hour Backgammon Session

In the world of poker and gambling you hear a lot about money won and lost, but it’s not too often that the true details of a gamble are known. One story in which plenty of the hard facts are known is that of Irish businessman and gambler JP McManus winning $17.4 million off of American billionaire Alec E. Gores in one marathon backgammon session. An article on The Daily Beast details the story of this massive windfall for McManus and how the facts became public when the Irishman and his legal team took steps to challenge the IRS over the $5.2 million of the money Gores lost which the private equity investor withheld and paid to the IRS in order to cover any possible federal liability.

Monk Faces Murder Charge After Gambling Debt Row

A Buddhist monk in Ayutthaya has been accused of hacking a man to death with a sickle following an argument over a football gambling debt. The incident occurred at Sai Noi temple in Bang Ban district shortly before 8 p.m. when Chatchai Plertplai, 40, arrived on a motorcycle and reprimanded Phra Prayoon, 48, who was scything grass on the temple premises. Ayutthaya police commander Sutthi Puangpikul said Phra Prayoon attacked Chatchai several times with the sickle in a fit of rage, killing him after being berated with vulgar words. Police arrested him shortly after he fled into hiding within the temple area.

Robber Threatened To Blow Up Banks In Bid To Pay Gambling Debt

A former taxi driver who robbed a bank and building society in Derby (United Kingdom) by threatening to blow them up has been jailed for eight years. Derby Crown Court heard that Ansar Ali committed the offences after he racked up gambling debts and borrowed money from loan sharks. The 40-year-old’s life took a downturn when he lost his job as a taxi driver following an incident in May 2014 when he mounted a pavement in Stuart Street, Derby, and drove into a man who was trying to escape without paying a fare. His victim was left with a fractured skull.

Woman Left 3 Young Children Alone In Hotel While At Casino

A Colorado woman has turned herself in at the Des Moines airport, ending the search for the woman who left her three young children in a hotel room while she went to the casino. Jeorkan Marie Alvarado Morales, 22, of Aurora, Colo., was charged with child endangerment after police heard her children’s screams coming from Altoona’s Quality Inn at 3:23 a.m. on Dec. 6, according to a criminal complaint. Officers opened the room using an emergency key and found a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 17-month-old alone in the room.

Defense Attorney Accused Of Smoking Heroin With Client At Casino

A Portland defense attorney has been arrested on suspicion of heroin and methamphetamine possession. Jeffrey Milstein, 46, was arrested at the Clackamas County Courthouse. Court records say the accusations against Milstein stem from a May 16 incident at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln County. A probable cause affidavit says casino staff called police after someone saw a woman and two men inside a car smoking drugs. Police later found the car and say several methamphetamine pipes, a “glob” of heroin and other drug paraphernalia were inside. The other man in the car reportedly was Milstein’s client.
