Gambling is a dwindling component to the overall vitality of Las Vegas, and so it appears that it could one day have multiple professional sports franchises.

Already set to get a NHL expansion team, the commissioner of Major League Baseball said in a recent interview on The Michael Kay Show on the YES network that Sin City could be an option for an expansion team at some point.

“We passed that by a long time ago, right? There are casinos all over the place [in America],” commissioner Rob Manfred said. “I see Las Vegas as a viable alternative. I would not disqualify it just because of the gambling issue.”

It’s worth noting that the MLB, which has long been anti-gambling, has a stake in gambling website DraftKings, a leading player in the DFS space.

According to SportingNews.com, Manfred said previously that a move to 32 teams is in the future of the league. The MLB last expanded in 1998.

The NFL is also considering Las Vegas. The Oakland Raiders are interested in moving to the gambling capital of America, and a billion-dollar stadium from Las Vegas Sands Corp. has been proposed.

With gaming win as a percentage of the casino industry’s total revenue being at a historic low, Las Vegas has refocused on entertainment and other non-gambling amenities to continue to grow. Pro sports franchises have been viewed as part of that shift.

Still, sports betting has never been bigger in Las Vegas. The Nevada handle is expected to approach $5 billion this year, which would be another all-time high.
