Nevada poker rooms raked $8.88 million during the month of May, according to figures released this week by Silver State gaming regulators.
That was a decline of nearly 14 percent year-over-year, compared to the $10.32 million in rake from May 2015. The summer months are typically the best time of the year for Nevada poker, thanks to the annual World Series of Poker tournaments and its cash games.
For the first time in years, the WSOP didn’t begin in May. This year, the first event of the WSOP kicked off on June 1. Last year, the WSOP tournaments began on May 27, which was also the starting day in 2014. In 2013, the WSOP commenced on May 29.
Poker revenue was $10.25 million in May 2014 and $10.26 million in May 2013. The best May result in history was the $14.14 million raked in both May 2007 and May 2008.
Nevada’s poker revenue includes online play, which didn’t start in Nevada until mid-2013.
May 2015 had 755 poker tables and 67 poker rooms. The number of tables was the most for the month since May 2013’s 865 tables statewide.
The Las Vegas Strip area had 21 of the poker rooms and 413 of the tables this May, which generated $5.75 million of the state total for the month. The revenue from the Las Vegas Strip area was down more than elsewhere in the state, falling 16.58 percent compared to May 2015.
