For the first time ever the the 2016 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) played host to a $102,000 buy-in super high roller event, the largest buy-in online tournament in poker history.
A total of 28 entries were made in this historic tournament, building a prize pool of $2,800,000. In the end the lion’s share of that was awarded to Swedish player “bencb789,” who defeated German superstar and current Card Player Player of the Year leader Fedor ‘CrownUpGuy’ Holz heads-up to capture the title and the top payout of $1,172,461.
Holz has had an unbelievable year on the live circuit, winning six titles at 14 final tables and cashing for nearly $16 million along the way. He added $1,067,639 to his bankroll after making a deal heads-up with bencb789 that left the title and $56,000 to play for.
Just a few hands after agreeing to the chop deal Holz ran a multi-street bluff in what would be his final hand of the tournament. With blinds of 2,400-4,800 and an ante of 720 Holz raised to 12,624 from the button. bencb789 made the call and then checked after the flop brought the K62. Holz bet 12,540 and bencb789 called. The 4 on the turn drew another check from bencb789. Holz bet 63,446 into a pot of just less than 54,000 and bencb789 called. The 10 on the river drew a third check from bencb789. Holz moved all-in for 316,035 and bencb789 made the call with the K4 for two pair. Holz had only the A3 for ace high and just like that it was all over.
Only the top three players made the money in this event, with Salman ‘salfshb’ Behbehani finishing third for $560,000. Isaac “philivey2694” Haxton was eliminated on the money bubble.
