The first skill-based slot machine in the country began taking wagers this week in Atlantic City.

A machine resembling a video game, but with the “same casino economics” as a slot device, was unveiled at Caesars’ casinos in the seaside gambling town. The game, titled “Danger Arena,” is a first-person game where skill helps determine the payout.

The game was designed by New York City-based GameCo, Inc.

“Caesars is excited to celebrate the launch of the world’s first skill-based video game gaming machines,” the casino operator said in a statement.

There are 21 of the new machines, which take 45-90 seconds to play, between the company’s three casinos. There are about 14,000 slot machines citywide.

Similar machines were approved for Nevada casinos, but they haven’t debuted yet. The idea is to attract a younger generation of gamblers (millennials).

“I spent my summers growing up playing video games at the arcade on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. It’s a unique honor to be bringing the first-ever skill-based video game gambling products to launch in Atlantic City with Caesars Entertainment,” said GameCo CEO Blaine Graboyes.

Graboyes added that he “envisions a bright, revitalized future in Atlantic City as a new generation of gamers find their way here.”

The debut of the skill-based slot machine comes at a time when Atlantic City’s finances are in a dire situation. The city has lost five casinos over the past three years.
