The $950 million MGM Springfield casino is now at its half-way point, and the property could end up taking bets sooner than the scheduled September 2018 opening.

According to a report from Masslive.com, the city of Springfield thinks the casino could be open for summer 2018. Construction moving ahead of schedule is good news because the casino experienced some delays during the design phase.

Road work around the casino should be completed early, which also bodes well for the city, according to the report. MGM Springfield is expected to create some 3,000 jobs.

Early plans are for a 20-table poker room, which would be larger than the casino operator’s poker room at its flagship Las Vegas Strip property.

MGM recently opened a 39-table poker room just outside Washington, D.C.

While the 20-table room planned for Springfield will be of great interest to local poker players, Wynn Resorts’ casino outside Boston is planning for 90 poker tables.

Wynn Boston Harbor is slated to open in June 2019.
