Online social gaming is fast becoming a cultural phenomenon, and poker is the key factor in this, according to the Financial Times today. With popular social network site, Facebook.com emerging as the place to be for gaming also, companies such as Google are now seeking ways to become part of this market.

Facebook has almost 200 million active members, and its most popular Zynga's Texas Hold'emapplication, which has been installed by 11 million of its networkers, is Texas Hold’em Poker. The thing that makes social networking sites so popular for gaming, according to the report, is the fact that users can compete with and beat their friends, which makes it more exciting and interesting than playing against strangers.

The sites leading publishers are San Francisco-based Zynga and London’s Playfish, which developed Pet Society — a game where players create and then care for their own virtual pets. In 18 months this game has attracted 60 million players and is even more popular than online poker when it comes to daily players.

It is free to set up a facebook account and to install its applications. The company does not charge developers for games as its current focus is to expand its user base.
