J.C. Tran has always been known as a hold’em specialist. Not anymore.
On Tuesday, Tran outlasted a field of 436 players to win event No. 30 ($2,500 pot-limit Omaha) at the World Series of Poker. The victory marks the first win in a non-hold’em event spanning his entire career playing major tournaments. Tran now has $8,398,822 in career earnings after taking home $235,685 for the win.
Playing pot-limit Omaha seriously for just two years now, Tran’s dominance throughout the tournament, especially at the final table, allowed him to capture his second bracelet. The other came at last year’s WSOP in a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event.
The quest for the second bracelet and a non-hold’em title looked easy for Tran, even at an experienced final table that included four-time bracelet winner John Juanda, recent champion of event No. 10 ($2,500 pot-limit omaha/pot-limit hold’em) Rami Boukai, and 2008 WSOP Europe event No. 3 ($9,368 pot-limit omaha) winner Theo Jorgensen.
Tran demonstrated through his confidence and command at the final table that he soon may be joining the short list of elite players who can win at any form of poker.

John Juanda Eliminated in Ninth Place ($24,207)
Dallas Flowers raised preflop, and the short-stack, John Juanda, made the call. The flop came 10

2, and Juanda moved all in. Flowers made the call.

Juanda had a ton of outs to double up and get back into contention, needing any spade, 7, or ace. None of them came, as the 6 hit the turn and the Q fell on the river, eliminating the four-time bracelet winner.
Theo Jorgensen Eliminated in Eighth Place ($26,955)
J.C. Tran raised under the gun to 55,000, and Theo Jorgensen reraised pot, to 195,000 total. Tran made the call, and the flop came 5 3 3, and Tran bet enough to put Jorgensen all in. Jorgensen made the call.

Jorgensen: A K K 7
Jorgensen was ahead with his pair of kings, but Tran had a flush draw plus runner-runner straight draws. The 4 hit the turn, giving Tran a shot at one of those straight draws. To the dismay of Jorgensen, the 6 fell on the river, eliminating him in eighth place. Tran was then up to 750,000.
Chad Layne Eliminated in Seventh Place ($31,427)
J.C. Tran bet 60,000 from the button, and Chad Layne reraised to 200,000. Tran went all in, having Layne significantly covered. Layne made the call.

The board ran out 10 3 3 5 4, offering no help to Layne.
Rami Boukai Eliminated in Sixth Place ($38,407)
J.C. Tran raised to 60,000 from the cut-off, and Jean Phillipe Leandri bet the pot. Rami Boukai went all in for less than Leandri’s bet, and Tran made the call. The flop came Q 7 2, and Leandri went all in. Tran called the bet.

Leandri was way out in front with his pair of aces and the nut-flush draw. The A hit the turn, giving Boukai and Tran miracle gutshot draws to win the hand. The 10 didn’t come for Tran, and the three didn’t fall for Boukai as the K hit the river, eliminating Boukai.
Dallas Flowers Eliminated in Fifth Place ($49,387)
Jeff Kimber raised preflop, and Dallas Flowers moved all in. Kimber made the call.

The board ran out 5 4 3 K Q, and Flowers was eliminated by the two pair of Kimber.
Ross Boatman Eliminated By Boat in Fourth Place ($66,936)
On a board of 8 3 2, Ross Boatman checked to J.C. Tran. Tran bet 60,000, and Boatman moved all in. Tran made the call.

Boatman: A 10 9 8
Tran was ahead with top two pair but when the A fell on the turn, giving Boatman top two, Tran needed a spade or a 3 for a full house. Both came in the form of the 3, giving Tran a boat and eliminating Boatman.
Jean Philipe Leandri Eliminated in Third Place ($95,837)
J.C. Tran, Jeff Kimber, and Jean Philipe Leandri all saw a flop of A 3 2. Leandri was first to act and bet 90,000. Kimber folded, and Tran reraised pot. Leandri called all in.

Leandri flopped two pair while Tran had a flush draw. The 10 gave both players a gutshot-straight draw. Leandri needed to dodge one more card to double up. However, the 4 fell on the river, giving Tran the pot and a big chip lead going into heads-up play.
J.C. Tran Wins Event No. 30 ($235,685), Jeff Kimber Eliminated in Second Place ($145,656)
Jeff Kimber raised to 120,000 on the button, and J.C. Tran made the call. The flop came 9 7 7, and Tran checked. Kimber bet 75,000, and Tran contemplated briefly before making the call. The 8 hit the turn, and Tran bet out 100,000. Kimber instantly went all in, and Tran quickly called.

Kimber: 6 5 4 3
Tran hit the perfect card in the deck on the turn, giving him eights full. Kimber flopped a gutshot-straight draw with his connecting cards and hit it, but he saw disaster when Tran flipped over a hand that had him drawing dead. The river was a meaningless 3, making Tran’s victory official. Tran won event No. 30 and his second bracelet, eliminating Kimber in second place.
