Shane Warne under fire for allegedly tweeting poker promotion in AustraliaOnline poker websites 888poker and Full Tilt made waves in the Australian media over the weekend for offering a free poker bankroll and sponsoring a rugby club respectively.

The 888-sponsored cricketer Shane Warne (pictured) was reported to have tweeted an offer to his 47,000 Twitter followers stating, “All my followers get free 8 dollars poker money by signing up here,” according to the News.com.au.

Warne’s agent claimed Warne was not aware of the tweet after criticism from a church leader over the possibility that the sports icon could influence children who looked up to him.

Elsewhere the National Rugby League in Australia said it is no longer pursuing a relationship with FullTiltPoker.net on advice of the government according to The Australian.

Steve Noyce of the Sydney Roosters rugby league team, which is sponsored by FullTiltPoker.net, told the newspaper that, "They haven’t told us to pull the sponsorship — they’ve just told us we should look at the advice so that’s what we’re doing.

“The important thing is that we have a relationship with FullTiltPoker.net which is the education site and the sole activity of that is education and you can’t gamble on that site whatsoever."

This news follows on from a recent attack by Betfair’s chief executive Andrew Twaits in Australia where he blasted his poker rivals over the promotion of their products in Australia which he described as “illegal”.
