The Australian government’s independent research and advisory body, the Productivity Commission, has recommended that online poker in the country should be legalised but the government has been quick to reject the idea.
The recommendation came in a comprehensive study of gambling in the country undertaken by the Commssion and published Wednesday which said, “In consultation with state and territory governments, the Australian Government should amend the Interactive Gambling Act to permit the supply of online poker card games.”
However communications minister Stephen Conroy told the Courier-Sun newspaper that, "We are not convinced that liberalising online gaming would have benefits for the Australian community which would outweigh the risks of an increased incidence of problem gambling, particularly with the rapid changes in technology.”
Online poker sites are widely advertised in Australia but cannot legally accept Australian pay-for-money players.
