Card Player LogoCard Player will make two changes to the scoring criteria for the 2011 Player of the Year race. These changes will allow players to score points in two types of events that have become popular on the tournament trail.

The first change states, “International events must have a buy-in of at least $500 USD, but will otherwise follow normal POY qualification criteria.” The previous threshold was set at $1,000 USD. This will allow for many more preliminary events at international tournament series to be included in the scoring. For example, this change will increase the number of events that qualify for the POY race at the upcoming Aussie Millions to 20, up from 14 under the old rules. This change will also increase the number of preliminary events players can score points in while attending major international poker tours throughout the year.

The other change for 2011 stipulates that, “Any tournament with a prize pool of more than $1 million will receive points.” This is regardless of the number of entrants. This will allow for the inclusion of super high roller events like those that will take place this month at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure ($100,000 Super High Roller – Jan. 6-7) and the Aussie Millions ($100,000 Challenge – Jan. 22-23).

Card Player continually adjusts the POY scoring criteria to reflect trends in tournament poker and these changes should facilitate a more competitive race for the POY award in 2011.
