With the blinds at 3,000 and 6,000 and a 1,000 ante, Filippi raised to 16,000 from early position, Zabib reraised to 35,000 from the button, Filippi called. On the Flop, Filippi checked, Zabib bet 115,000, Filippi went all-in, Zabib called.
Zabib submitted a small reraise preflop, designed to prevent overcalls from the blinds while luring Filippi into a heads-up pot with irresistible pot odds. The board came highly coordinated but low, offering obvious straight and flush draws. Filippi submitted a nice check raise, forcing Zabib into an unpleasant decision. Zabib surmised his opponent might check raise with a large number of hands he could beat on the wet board, other overpairs, flush draws with overcards, and various combination draws such as 5-6. Comforted by his substantial chip lead over Filippi he called, but discovered he was trailing and would need the wheel or one of the remaining Aces for the set. Filippi held off the sweaty redraw, scoring a massive double after his set-mining was paid in full. Both enjoyed tremendous runs this year, Filippi ultimately finished in 39th for $191,646, while Zabib busted in 35th for $236,921.
