Analysis

Sternheimer tried to maintain the lead in the hand by betting the flop, but Volpe welcomed the action with his full house. The third spade and overcard on the turn slowed Sternheimer into check-call mode, where Volpe submitted a well sized value bet. This was a good time for him to build a pot against a flush draw that could already be drawing dead. It also set his opponent up to get stacked on the river due to Sternheimer’s remaining chip position after the call. The river put the four-flush on board, with Sternheimer making a low flush. Volpe went all-in, forcing Sternheimer into a decision for his remaining stack of 27 big blinds. Volpe’s use of the all-in mimicked a big stack making a bluff on a threatening board, putting Sternheimer in a confusing spot with a modest bluff catching hand. Sternheimer’s curiosity got the better of him as he was eliminated in 252nd, for $38,453. Volpe made a deep run into 20th, for $294,601.
