Preflop, final table, six-handed, with the blinds at 50,000 and 100,000 and a 15,000 ante, Jaffee raised to 225,000, Merulla reraised to 595,000 from the button, Jattin reraised to 1,125,000 from the big blind, Jaffee went all-in, Merulla called and was all-in, and Jattin called and was all-in.
Jaffee realized his hand strength was probably stronger than his opponents suspected, so when he saw Merulla make what he thought to be a button play, and Jattin a possible squeeze, Jaffee went ahead and announced a hand by going all-in, hoping to use the leverage of his stack to get the folds. He wanted to shut down the button vs blinds squeeze dynamics that he thought were in play. Jaffee’s hand strength, larger stack, and the level of increased aggression in six-handed play also motivated his move. Improbably all three players woke up with big pairs at the short handed table, but Jaffee came from behind on the turn to make top set. Merulla had picked up a diamond draw however, while poor Jattin was drawing to one out just seconds after having both opponents crushed. Merulla redrew to his flush on the river, catapulting up the leaderboard, while Jaffee was left to nurse his remaining stack of 15 big blinds. Jattin had started the day with 6.1 million in chips, but just eleven hands later he was eliminated in 6th for $174,352. Jaffee was eliminated soon after in 4th for $258,590. Merulla went on to face David Paredes heads-up for the title, courtesy of this key hand.
