Outcome

Preflop, final table, four handed, with the blinds at 50,000 and 100,000 and a 15,000 ante, Suller raise to 200,000 from under the gun, Wilkerson reraised to 475,000 from the button, and Suller called. On the flop Suller checked, Wilkerson bet 400,000, Suller raised to 1,000,000, Wilkerson went all-in, and Suller called and was all-in.

Analysis

Wilkerson caught a piece of the flop with bottom pair, but his opponent pushed back with a nicely sized check-raise. Wilkerson had to decide if the button vs. blind dynamics inspired his opponent to check-raise with air, or perhaps a hand like 10-9 that might fold to his shove. Wilkerson must have hoped these dynamics were in play, because otherwise the fact that his opponent was willing to invest so much of his remaining chip position with the check raise argue for the fold. Suller did well to keep his check-raise amount relatively low, a larger amount would have probably let Wilkerson know there was nothing he could do to get a fold. This bet sizing encouraged Wilkerson to believe that the three-betting preflop and contentious nature of shorthanded and blind vs. button play motivated Suller to make the play. But by the same token the ratio of the check-raise amount to Suller’s remaining chip position and the fact that he mounted the play to begin with could have sounded alarm bells for Wilkerson before he misstepped. Wilkerson was drawing dead to running Aces or running Fives, and Suller caught a nice double up. Suller eventually busted in 3rd, for $477,470.
