Preflop, with the blinds at 4,000 and 8,000 and a 1,000 ante, Israelashvii went all-in from under the gun, and Parker called in the big blind.
We’ve covered hands where Vanessa Selbst shoved her last 15 big blinds in with Q-9 in an effort to steal the blinds, but she did it from the button where she only had to get past a couple of opponents. Israelashvii had the entire table to get through. People start to expect these shoves when their opponents’ stacks get in the 15 big blind range and below. And short stacks who open shove from under the gun often get looked up just on principle. Israelashvii was a little too deep, too marginal, and too far from the button to reasonably hope that this would end well. Israelashvii had time for a better spot, and still enough chips to come over the top of an active opener and potentially capture a much larger preflop pot with a well-timed steal. And obviously he had some time to wait for a real hand as well. Parker went on to finish in 10th for $63,081.
