Outcome

Preflop, with the blinds at 2,500 and 5,000 and a 500 ante, Burt raised to 10,000 from the button, Townsend went all-in from the small blind, and Burt called and was all-in.

Analysis

Just a few seats off the bubble, Townsend threatened the tournament life of his shorter stacked opponent. Townsend was hammering down a very wide range of a player opening the button with a min-raise down to the very narrow range of someone who was willing to call off 34 big blinds just an orbit or two from a $18,406 min-cash. Normally you would not find Townsend shipping almost 35 big blinds in preflop with QJ – but this was a classic bubble play at work. Even with his monster, Burt tanked for awhile, probably considering that A-X beats pocket Kings an unacceptable amount of time, and he could easily fold his way to at least $18,406. Thankfully Burt eventually realized he could not live with himself if he folded Kings in this spot, but he did tank until the clock was called on him – even though they were still a few bustouts away from hand for hand play. Burt picked up a small sweat as Townsend paired his Jack on the turn, but of course the Queens were not a viable out for Townsend as Burt had that two pair combination already counterfeited with the running ducks on the flop. Burt faded the Jack, doubled up, and later busted in 537th for $22,678. Townsend’s run finished in 170th, for $44,728.
