Preflop, with the blinds at 80,000 and 160,000 and a 20,000 ante, Smith raised to 350,000 from late position, van Hoof reraised to 900,000 from the small blind, Smith reraised to 1,825,000, van Hoof went all-in, and Smith called.
Dan Smith was certainly one of the best and most experienced players remaining after the field had shrunk down to 20 runners, but a simple coin flip ended his run. He probably wishes he could go back in time and either flat-call van Hoof’s preflop reraise or move all-in. Either line would have been more effective than a four-bet to this amount, which opened the door for van Hoof to make this play. Since Smith was so strong in his range for this button opening he could have truly put pressure on van Hoof with an all-in, rather than click it back with a four-bet that would lay van Hoof better than 3:1 pot odds. Alternatively a flat call would have allowed Smith to control the pot size with a premium hand in position while it appeared that he was just defending a button steal. For his part van Hoof was a bit of a maniac with his baby pair, but he knew he didn’t want to play a small pair out of position post flop. Smith was eliminated in 20th for $286,900, while van Hoof is currently the chipleader among the November Nine.
