Preflop, with the blinds at 15,000 and 30,000 and a 4,000 ante, Gordillo raised to 60,000 from the button, Pauli reraised to 170,000 from the small blind and Gordillo called. On the flop Pauli checked, Gordillo bet 155,000 and Pauli called. On the turn Pauli checked and Gordillo checked. On the river Pauli checked, Gordillo bet 505,000 and Pauli called.
Gordillo found his hand strength suitable for absorbing Pauli’s three-bet knowing he would enjoy position later in the hand and that he wasn’t in a terrible part of his range for opening the button with a raise. Pauli found himself in the unenviable spot of playing a weak Ace out of position, so he slipped into a defensive mode. He had the advantage of a substantial chip lead over his opponent. Gordillo sought to use his position to pick up the pot, but with a piece of the flop and a mound of chips Pauli was ready with his check-call on the flop. The turn card functioned as a scare card for both players, obviously four to the straight were now on board. Pauli was relieved his opponent check behind. Gordillo used the Ace on the river as well as the coordinating straightening cards to run his bluff on the river, and he used some heavy bet sizing to discourage a call. The biggest problem with this river bluff was that Pauli could have easily had the Ace, after all it is the most common holding to submit a reraise out of the blinds. Gordillo would have had better luck representing the straight on the turn. Gordillo lost 47% of his stack but continued his run to the final table where he finished in 8th for £51,900. Pauli also made the final table, where he defeated Kevin Macphee heads-up to score his first major and £499,700.
