Preflop, final table, six handed, with the blinds at 400,000 and 800,000 and a 100,000 ante, van Hoof raised to 1,800,000 from the button, Larrabe went all in from the small blind, and van Hoof called.
Larrabe should have been well aware van Hoof had just called an all-in quite light, owing to the pot odds involved and his mountain of chips. Dan Sindelar had been brutally eliminated just a few orbits earlier when van Hoof called his opponent’s all-in four bet. Larrabe needed to know that the math of this hand was not in his favor, as van Hoof would only face another 6,525,000 for the pot of 11,525,000, receiving 1.76 : 1 on the call. Larrabe should never have concluded that this play would get a fold under any circumstances, and Jack high was not a strong enough hand to go with. Even with an extremely wide opening range on the button van Hoof could still have easily had him high-carded. Larrabe’s last ten big blinds still had some time to find a better spot. His all-in three bets should have been mounted only with real hands, as they would almost always get called due to the pot odds and his chip position. If he was ready to move in with Jack-Ten those shoves should have been reserved only for those times when the action was folded to him. Larrabe was drawing dead on the turn, but earned $1,622,080 for his sixth place finish.
