Outcome

Preflop, shorthanded, with the blinds at 25,000 and 50,000 and a 5,000 ante, Schillhabel raised to 115,000 from under the gun, Drinan reraised to 300,000 from the button, Schillhabel reraised to 760,000, and Drinan called. On the flop Schillhabel bet 460,000, Drinan went all-in, and Schillhabel called.

Analysis

With shorthanded play in effect at the two remaining tables Drinan mounted a pre flop button steal, but Schillhabel pushed back utilizing excellent bet sizing to lure Drinan further into the hand with the suited connectors. Schillhabel exhibited some more successful bet sizing on the flop, where he led out with an underbet into the 1.62 million pot, trolling Drinan. Drinan had flopped an inside straight draw with overcards to the flop, and he was really hoping to be up against AK and force the fold from Schillhabel by moving in. But against any pocket pair Sixes or higher, he was going to get called. The middling pairs would either have flopped a set or have an open-ended straight draw, while the higher pairs would be overpairs disinclined to fold. So Drinan’s play would work well against the potential AK or AQ in his opponent’s range, but not very well against the pocket pairs. Schillhabel was ready with the call and looking to fade the Eights, but Drinan gave him some consternation when he picked up the four flush on the turn. Schillhabel faded the outs, and scored a massive pot that set him up nicely for the final table while eliminating one his most dangerous opponents as well. He also scored a $2,500 bounty, as Drinan was a shooting star. Aside from a win in the 2011 Florida State Poker championship, Drinan doesn’t have a major title under his belt, but he has accumulated $8.8 million in earnings. Drinan scored $102,760 for his 8th place finish.
