The World Poker Open preliminary events at the Gold Strike Hotel Casino in Robinsonville, Mississippi, opened Jan. 3 to huge fields. The first 10 events have awarded $1.5 million from the more than 3,600 entrants.

The first three events were no-limit hold’em tournaments, with the first being a $300 buy-in event. It attracted 782 players, making a prize pool of nearly $235,000. Joey Sharp won the first-place prize of almost $59,000. So far, none of the events have surpassed the first one in number of entrants. Events No. 2 and 3 had $500 buy-ins. The second event featured the biggest prize pool so far at $285,500. Matt Culberson won nearly $73,000 for defeating a 517-player field. More than 1,700 entrants generated a combined prizepool of over $700,000 in just the first three events.

A few other highly attended events include event No. 6, a $300 buy-in no-limit hold’em event which saw an impressive turnout of 594 players. Harold Lockwood won more than $47,000 for winning this event. Also, event No. 10 had 419 competitors fight for the almost $60,000 first-place prize. Michael Samuel ended up taking home the lion’s share of the $209,000 prize pool for that event.
