Still in…with a Chip and a Grinby Ciaran O'Leary | Published: Jul 06, '09 |
Rather than sitting around and waiting a few days, I decided to get stuck in straight away and play on the first day (1A) of the main event. It seemed like the way to go as most of my friends were also doing the same thing.
The day begins with me scoping out my table and seeing who was at it. As is the case with table draw, it is always so important. After a quick look around I was happy to see that no big name players were sitting at mine.
However it didn’t take long to discover that many of those who were at my table were all pretty damn good players. In particular, two of the lads to my immediate right.
Anyway, it’s fair to say that these boys made it a very long day for both me and the rest at the table. Between the two of them I’d say they raised it up over 90 percent of the time. How dangerous it is when combining aggression, great play, and then have them running well all at the same time. It makes for a potent adversary, that’s for sure. It was a combination that was pretty hard to play against. It just really seems that everyone is getting better each year.
Unfortunately for me I didn’t see much in the way of decent starting hands to get in involved with. I did pick up queens in the first level but the alarm bells were blaring aloud as I somehow put my opponent on the bullets so rather than re-raising him I just flat called and after a C-bet from him on the flop I mucked and sure enough he had the Aces. Phew!
Then I picked up jacks an hour later and went to the flop heads up with a lad but again pulled a Houdini when a queen showed up and was again able to exit the hand with only a limited amount of harm done. In fairness he showed me the Queen after I lashed him with some golden tongue. Phew again!
By the end of the night I was still there with just over 20,000 in chips. (Ah sure I suppose it’s better than a kick in the arse) and considering the day that was in it — I’m happy enough with where I am
Common ya good thing!!
