Congrats to Gavin, Call Child Services!by Roy Winston | Published: Jun 27, '10 |
I am back home in NY and packing up for my return to Vegas. This has been an unusual WSOP for me having only played a couple of events. I am ready to be back playing in Vegas, and am truly excited for the main event. I have signed up for he last day and will be playing the cash games at Aria on the off days. One of my brothers will be in Vegas with me as well, which will be really nice. I was happy to see Gavin win a bracelet, he is a great player and it was only a matter of when.
One topic that keeps appearing in the news is this 16 year old sailor from California who set out to break the solo around the world sailing record, Abby Sunderland, who wound up needing a multi-million dollar rescue a couple of thousand miles away from Australia. It’s like the Emperor’s new clothes, they talk about the cost of the rescue and how that’s part of maritime culture, but maritime rescue “no expense spared” rules exist to keep shipping safe. That’s just it, shipping which is vital to world wide commerce, which we all depend on, and are willing to have these costs built in to the system. But when an adventure seeking teen, which is nothing more than vanity run amuck, goes off on a reckless thrill seeking adventure, it’s redonkulous. Those who chose to spend their lives on such adventures should have the financial resources to fund their mischief. It is absurd to expect governments and it’s taxpayers to be the safety net for such folly.
Furthermore, I would like to see child protective services in California step up and take action against her parents. Parents these days barely let a 16 year old teen out on a date past 11pm, how reckless is it of them to say okay honey take the boat around the world. I am an experienced sailor myself and have sailed and raced for years in different seas and oceans around the world. I would say it boarders on criminally negligent to allow a 16 year old off on such an “adventure.”
