In The Money at the WSOP!by Roy Winston | Published: Jun 21, '08 |
The 2k pot limit holdem event went really well for me right up until the second to last hand of the night. I had chipped up steadily all day and with the average stack around 34,000 and the field cut from 604 to 64, and one place away from the money I pick up AK suited and raise. I am 3 bet by Shane schleger who now has three bet on my last three raises. So I come over the top and we are all in. He turns over QQ and I can't improve my hand and am now down to about 20k. The next hand eliminates a player and I survive to make the money. I will have my work cut out for me tomorrow, starting out short stack, but at least I'm in it and in the money. I promise you that no one in the field will be trying any harder than me. Earlier Dario was moved to my table, fresh off his bracelet win from two days ago, and it was kind of funny he went 8 hands and stayed out of every pot, mucking his blinds as well. I turned to him and said okay now who are you, where's the real Dario and what have you done with him. He is really a nice guy and we kidded around until our table broke about an hour later.
From time to time I have mentioned my friend Jay Berger, who is now out here at the WSOP and trying to, like a lot of us out here, win at the World Series of Poker. He has gone out of a couple of events now in a similar fashion, one that I have seen many times in many players, going broke in a multi way unraised or limped pot. In way I may be responsible for Jay's latest bust outs. When he spent a weekend sweating my hands at The Commerce, he watched me on many occasions limp with big pairs in a multi way pot. What he missed was that a cash game is different than a tournament and I would throw the hand away if the flop didn't improve the hand. I keep telling him don't go broke in limp pots.
I guess I'm not going to the Borgata, I would have to leave today. I did get a nice email from Tab who said I have a seat with my name on it. I will be there for their September events. They way the tournaments are run is really fantastic, like this one starting with 50k in chips and a great structure. I wish there was a WSOP event like that.
