Back To Borgataby Roy Winston | Published: Sep 07, '08 |
I am again sitting on a plane heading cross country from Las Vegas to Philadelphia, then onto Atlantic City. It has been almost a year since winning the Borgata and I'm back to play again. This was really the weekend that launched me on the road to playing full time, so I have reflected on this past year. I am often asked how come I gave up practicing medicine to play poker and it is one of those things that just kind of happened. I was practicing full time in the Palm Springs Valley, but was in the process of selling my half of the practice to my then partner Dr. Andrew Ordon. I felt like although I enjoyed my work there I wanted to get back closer to home and spend more time with my family. My parents and brothers along with my nieces and nephew are all in the New York City area and I felt like I was not able to spend enough time with them.
Last year's win at Borgata which followed a good World Series for me just let me jump right from the pot into the fire. My initial plane was to take the better part of a year off to travel and have some fun and then find a practice opportunity somewhere in the NY area. Well, the best laid plans of mice and men. So the opportunity to play poker full time just sort of presented itself at an opportune moment.
As I reflect on this year I am reminded of the highs and lows, good and bad, fun and well not so fun times. I have made some great friends and been on the inside of a very interesting world which I have come to respect and appreciate. The journey has been an interesting one and it continues to unfold in ways I never would have anticipated just a year ago.
