Off to the Main Eventby Roy Winston | Published: Jul 06, '09 |
The main event of the 2009 World Series of Poker is finally here. I am playing today, day 1D. It seems that turn out so far is off from last year, although it appears that today’s field will be the largest of the four days, with about 3,600 playing the first 3 days. I usually play the first day of multi start events, but I had a family event out of town and this worked out well for me. I spent the weekend relaxing, although I did play online a little at Full Tilt.
As far as events go, the main event of the WSOP fits my game well. By this I mean, starting with 30,000 in chips and a slow progression of blinds, increasing every two hours, plays a lot like the cash games I play. My basic strategy early on will be to play relatively tight, and look for good situations and play my position well. Judging from the past couple of first start days only 30% of the field is being eliminated. Everyone seems to get caught up with staying “above average” in chips, but what is of greatest importance in any tournament, and particularly the main event is survival. Avoiding the marginal situations, not getting too attached to any hand or situation, and keep putting your money in ahead. I feel if I keep telling myself this again and again maybe I can do it. A little luck thrown in wouldn’t hurt either.
I will keep track of some interesting hands and twitter them, or I guess it’s tweet them as they happen. Time to hop into the shower and head to the Rio.
