Supernova Night Out Part I

My alarm sounded at 10 a.m. but I just couldn’t find the will to crawl out of bed. It wasn’t until 40 minutes later when I heard a strange mixture of old time western music and futuristic conversations coming from the other room that I got up out of pure curiosity. My roommate, Zak, had found the TV show Firefly on Netflix. I’ve never watched the show but have been aware of its one season cult hit status for years. I can honestly say that I was hooked during my oatmeal and toast breakfast.

Zak kept grinding out Firefly episodes while I was banging out the 1-2 PLO games. I’m happy to say that I added another three winning sessions to my much needed back in Canada run. Over the last month I did some real damage to my roll through cash outs and run bad so I expect to be in 1-2 for the next month with some strategic shots at 2-4 along the way. I’m in a great spot to move up because I know I’m close to a 150BI winner this year at 2-4 and have notes on all the good players. It’s just a matter of me seeing the right line-up and running well in the beginning.

I finished up all things poker around 6 p.m. just in time to welcome Sophia home from work. She knew I had my night out with PokerStars at Empire Grill so she was going out to The Keg with three of her girlfriends. The Keg is a steakhouse chain that everybody but me likes. It’s not the food that bothers me it’s that I had three consecutive screw-ups with my meal in three different locations in three different cities. It’s enough to put me off a franchise. We both parted ways just before 8 and I made my way one and half blocks to Empire.

I had jokingly texted my friend Adam asking him what the over under on 20 minutes late would be. Somehow he beat me to the bar and we shared a laugh at my expense. Our PokerStars rep, Dylan, had told us that there would be nine SuperNovas attending the meal. I wasn’t sure who exactly would be attending but I was sure I would know most of them. Unlike most cities Ottawa’s poker community has been around for many years. Over the next half hour everybody showed up and we were all drinking by the bar. Our group consisted of many familiar faces.

Me – The only PLO grinder
Adam – “Fishbones11” CardRunners instructor and general MTT sicko
Krissy – “Krissyb24” Adam’s girlfriend, Full Ring NL SNE
Frank – “OTTCanada” MTT grinder famous for having the highest win rate at $3 180 man SnG. I’m unclear if this record still stands.
Qi – “Qihu00” NL HU SnG at all stakes $100+
Marc Karam – All round guy who happens to crush all forms of poker for many years
Mona – “SexyHands” Marc’s girlfriend and quite the MTT player
Tony – “Vigilanty” I’m fairly certain he’s strictly NL cash
Alan – 23-year-old Australian exchange student who shares my love of the Ozzie Sopranos “Under Belly”
Dylan – The PokerStars Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes VIP Coordinator

As a side note I should tell everybody of my good friend deed of the day. My friend Tom is the bar manager at Empire so I stopped in there during lunch to find out if he’d be working at night. He had plans but I ran into another friend Lisa, a server, who was supposed to be cut first later that night. I told her that it was in her best interest to stay on as PokerStars was picking up the bill for a party of 10 people hell-bent on having a great meal. She made the necessary changes to her night and booked a nice win on the tip.
