Supernova Night Out Part IIby Galen Cranston | Published: Oct 29, '11 |
Following on from part I… It took roughly an hour for us to make our way to our table. This is fairly good time for a group of poker players. Dylan ordered two different bottles of red wine and we took the menu by storm. Appetizers of all variety were ordered with me getting my standard shrimp cocktail. If its on the menu I’ll usually order that. Dylan asked for a seafood plate under the guidelines “I’ll just have this and someone will help me eat it”. Steaks of all kinds were ordered. I got the special of a 12oz filet mignon with Portobello mushroom and red wine sauce with a side of sauteed mushrooms. Again I’m a giant fish for mushrooms.
The appetizers came in reasonable time and everything got devoured. I chipped in my part to finishing the seafood platter by taking two crab legs and one lobster tail onto my plate. I’m basically the nicest guy ever. Conversations were quite lively and I was sitting in the middle of the table unsure as to which one to be a part of. I told Marc of some loser kid in London bragging to a crowd about being so good at Rush poker but quickly shut up when I mentioned Marc’s name. To those not in the know Marc is basically the sickest Rush poker player out there.
I told Dylan about some of my adventures in London over the last year. To my surprise he knew about the Champagne SuperNova night with Dustin, Team Online Manager, and Serena, Social Manager. Apparently that party was talked about in the PokerStars staff circles and I’m pretty happy I was a part of it. As the steaks came out we reloaded with more bottles of wine. I’m fairly certain all the non-drivers had a good buzz going at this point. Around this time Sophia texted me that three of them were going to crash our dinner as they were settling up their tabs.
The girls showed up just in time to see the ninehanded PLO flip for Ottawa Senators, the NHL team, tickets. Clearly I knew I was going to get a sweat and was hoping for a nice multi-way hand. I got dealt K Q Jx 8x but was crushed by Tony’s Ax Kx J 7. The flop came out with me binking the nuts with the nut straight redraw on T 9 7. Somehow I was the only one with the J-8 and nobody seemed to admit to having a flush draw. The turn brought the A and Krissy started cheering for the board to pair. I knew Tony had clubs and saw that at the end of the table Qi had 6 high hearts. FML this board couldn’t possibly hold. The river crushed my dreams with a low club. Tony thought he had won but Alan the Australian slow-rolled him with the nuts. It’s quite ironic that a NL player, who didn’t know the rules of PLO, won the NHL tickets to see hockey, a sport he also doesn’t know the rules to.
As desserts came out the girls headed off to a bar down the street. I said I would join them when I was done. I enjoyed one last whiskey and coke with my creme brulee then decided to do everyone a favour and lead the exodus. I’m no stranger to the fact that poker players are like scared sheep needing someone to lead them everywhere so I didn’t feel rude being the first to excuse myself. I said my goodbyes and thanked Dylan for a great night.
Thank you to PokerStars for the night out and getting the Ottawa crew back together for a fantastic evening.
