A Funny Thing Happened at the Joe Barton Annual Poker Tourney

I am fortunate to know Congressman Joe Barton, who has been representing Texas’ sixth district since 1985. Barton, who is serving his sixteenth term in the United States House of Representatives, is a good friend to poker players.

Every year during the World Series of Poker, Barton hosts a poker tournament to thank some of his supporters. Some poker pros always play in the event to show support for Barton’s efforts to get online poker legalized on the federal level. At my table today were Barry Greenstein, Jake Cody, Dennis Phillips, Congressman Barton, Jack Gramley, and several lobbyists from Washington D.C.

One of the lobbyists told me she had never played poker before. This became evident quickly and led to one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen at the poker table. Phillips raised from early position and got two callers. The lobbyist called from the button position. As the dealer was about to put out the flop, she said, “I think I need a second card.” Sure enough, she only had called the raise cold with only one card. To make it even funnier, the card she had called with was a nine.
