Casino owner Onex Corporation, which has gambling interests in the United States and Canada, does not want a casino to be approved for downtown Toronto.
The Toronto Star reported that the firm has been lobbying to prevent the city from saying OK to the casino idea, which has garnered interest from the likes of MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Corporation — two of the largest casino developers in the world.
Instead, Onex reportedly wants to build a property just outside of Toronto. That plan would also need approval by local rule-makers.
Decisions could be made by the Toronto council this spring.
