This week in poker news was announcements of big winners. Juan Carlos Mortenson won the $25,000 buy-in World Poker Tour Championship, Cory Carroll won the $5,000 buy-in Caesars World Series of Poker Circuit event and J.C. Tran won the WPT Player of the Year Award.
Tournaments
Juan Carlos Mortensen won the World Poker Tour championship at the Bellagio. It was a $25,000 buy-in that attracted 639 players. The prize pool was more than $15 million and he received $3.97 million for the win. He is the first person to hold both a World Series of Poker and WPT title. Kirk Morrisson was awarded $2 million for second.

The World Series of Poker Circuit event at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas attracted hundreds of players for its preliminary events. There were eight events that were all no-limit except one $3,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event. Also, the last preliminary event was a ladies tournament. All events and their winners are listed.

Established online player Cory "UGOTPZD" Carroll won the Caesars World Series of Poker Circuit event. A total of 336 players put up the $5,000 buy-in to vie for their piece of the $506,176 prize pool. Poker pros Chad Brown and David "The Dragon" Pham were also featured at the final table. It was Justin Pechie that made it heads up with Carroll but finished in second place for $260,736. Carroll also won a seat into the WSOP main event.

Las Vegas offers many low buy-in tournaments for weekend visitors. When searching for a suitable tournament, players should consider buy-in amounts, rebuys or add-ons, starting chips, structure and house rake. The structure and percentage taken out of the tournament fees for the prize pool can be rather steep for these low stakes tournaments. A few popular tournaments in Las Vegas are noted.

The monthly $500 buy-in of the PokerStars Sunday Million tournament attracted 2,880 players. The prize pool was $1,440,000. MattSuspect and gunning4you made a two-way, by-the-chips chop and played for the remaining $30,000 that must be put aside for the eventual winner according to PokerStars chopping rules. MattSuspect began heads up play with about 70 percent more chips than gunning4you. He took down the title when his pocket jacks held up against gunning4you's pocket nines when they were all in preflop. MattSuspect received at total of $223,673 while gunning4you took $175,818 for second.
Full Tilt's $400,000 guarantee attracted 2,334 players on Sunday to make a prize pool of $466,800. Toppsett began the final table as chip leader and eventually got heads up against MathForPoker with a nearly 2-to-1 chip lead. MathForPoker doubled up twice and won the match two minutes later. MathForPoker took $81,634.46 for first while toppsett received $55,561.68.
A total of 934 entrants played in the UltimateBet $200,000-guaranteed tournament but still was not enough to cover the guarantee. There was $13,200 worth of dead money in the prize pool. POPMONSTER placed first for $45,000 and Wachovia was awarded $26,500 for second.
The Bodog $100,000 guarantee lured 810 players but an extra $19,000 was still needed for the overlay. TheNogre came to the final table with the chip lead but was eliminated in third place. Addrock and zabadguy went heads up for the win. It was addrock who won the $25,000 for first and zabadguy got $14,000 for second.

The Queen of Hearts Poker Team as been assembled for the World Series of Poker. Pros such as Vanessa Rousso, Isabelle Mercier and Clonie Gowen have committed to playing the ladies' event at this summer's WSOP and donating a portion of their wins to benefit the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women Campaign" and the Nevada Cancer Institute.

Liz Lieu continues her charity efforts and has announced her involvement with the Women in Need foundation. WIN has outreach centers across the country and in Athens, Greece to help women with abuse and self-esteem recovery. Lieu will donate a percentage of her winnings and help bring awareness to the cause.

J.C. Tran won the World Poker Tour Player of the Year that culminated at the WPT Championship event at the Bellagio. His three final table finishes in WPT events scored him enough points to win the title. Close behind were Joe Pelton and Daniel Negreanu who could have surpassed him with a significant finish at the final event. Once these two players were eliminated early, Tran officially won the title. He is also still leading the Card Player Player of the Year race.

The North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled that chance dominates skill in poker, and therefore should be considered a game of chance which makes it illegal according to state law. Howard Fierman wanted to open a poker club called the Joker Club in Durham County but was denied because officials said that it was illegal. Fierman sued the county but was unsuccessful.
