Outcome

With the blinds at 120,000-240,000 and a 30,000 ante, Duhamel raised to 550,000 from the cutoff seat, Affleck reraised to 1,550,000 from the button, Duhamel reraised to 3,925,000, Affleck called. After the flop, Duhamel checked, Affleck bet 5,000,000, Duhamel called. After the turn, Duhamel checked, Affleck went all in, Duhamel called.

Analysis

Affleck took a nice line preflop by refraining from the hand-tipping five-bet. Now his line gave the appearance that he might have just been making a play at Duhamel’s late-position opening, subsequently defending his three-bet in position once Duhamel came back at him. Duhamel flopped a gutshot-straight draw in addition to his overpair to the board, but checked it over to Affleck. His check-call indicated that he might have already been concerned about Affleck’s holding, since he declined to check-raise on the trap. An overcard to Duhamel’s jacks appeared on the turn, but it also improved his straight draw to open-ended. While the flop was already too coordinated for Affleck’s comfort, the appearance of this unwelcome Broadway card on the turn soon found him all in to protect his hand. Duhamel had under-represented his hand twice, both on the flop and turn, but he had shown strength preflop. Duhamel had no clue where he was in the hand, but he did know he had outs and his opponent covered by a substantial 9 million (37 big blinds). Duhamel’s time in the tank alleviated Affleck’s fears that his aces had already been overtaken, but when Duhamel came up with the wrong decision, Affleck had to sweat 10 outs. The river filled Duhamel’s straight, eliminating one of the most talented players in the field. Affleck scored $500,165 for his 15th-place finish, improving on his remarkable 81st-place finish from the 2009 main event. After taking down both SCOOP and FTOPS events this spring, it’s safe to say Affleck will command a good deal of attention and respect going forward.
