Outcome

Preflop, with five players remaining and blinds of 1,000,000-2,000,000 with a big blind ante of 2,000,000, Rui Ferreira raised to 4,000,000 from the cutoff and Moritz Dietrich called from the big blind. On the flop Dietrich checked, and Ferreira bet 2,562,329. Dietrich called. On the turn Dietrich checked, and Ferreira bet 9,687,500. Dietrich called. On the river both players checked.

Analysis

This hand could have all but spelled the end of Moritz Dietrich’s tournament. He flopped the second-nut straight against the nut-straight in a single-raised pot against a player that he only had covered by a handful of big blinds. Had he fast played on the flop, he could have been drawing to a chop for the majority of his stack. As it was, he just check-called the flop with his queen-high straight. Luckily for Dietrich, the turn brought the ASpade Suit, making a flush possible. Dietrich responded to this scare card with another check. Ferreira might not have loved that card either, but still went for a healthy value bet of nearly two-thirds pot with his now ace-high straight. Ferreira might have been looking to extract value from Dietrich’s flush draws with this bet. Dietrich made the call and the river brought a fourth spade. The KSpade Suit also made it so that Dietrich was only chopping with any non-spade 10-X combo that Ferreira could have. He checked a third time and Ferreira checked behind, not wanting to risk value-owning himself against a possible middling flush for Dietrich. The pot was chopped and Dietrich ended up no worse for wear despite being on the wrong end of a cooler after the first three cards hit the board. Dietrich went on to win this event, earning more than $4 million and his first bracelet as the champion. Ferreira scored nearly $2.4 million as the eventual third-place finisher.
