Preflop, with two players remaining and blinds of 150,000-300,000 with a big blind ante of 300,000, Simone Andrian raised to 700,000 from the button. Urmo Velvelt called from the big blind. On the flop Velvelt checked, and Andrian bet 450,000. Velvelt check-raised to 1,600,000. Andrian called. On the turn Velvelt bet 4,000,000, and Andrian called. On the river Velvelt moved all-in, and Andrian folded.
Run good can come in many forms in poker. It doesn’t always present as a cooler in your favor or as running cards to see a second-best hand come from behind to win. In this hand matchup, for example, Simone Andrian ran well to have the turn and river bring scare cards after he flopped kings and threes against the trips of his heads-up opponent Urmo Velvelt. Andrian might have been eliminated in this hand if the turn and/or river were more innocuous. As it was, he was able to keep his hopes alive with a bracelet and a seven-figure top prize on the line. Andrian opened the action preflop with a raise in position with his K-7 suited. Velvelt came along with the less-than-enticing holding of 5-3 offsuit but jumped out to a massive lead on the flop. He check-raised with his trips and Andrian made the call. The turn brought not only an overcard to his king but also a third heart to make a flush possible. This completed the most likely semi-bluff candidate from the flop, which was a heart flush draw. Velvelt backed up his flop aggression with another barrel, opting for a sizing of roughly 45 percent pot. Andrian made the call yet again and the river double-paired the board. Velvelt shoved for value with his underfull, but Andrian was able to make the correct laydown with what had become a pure bluff catcher. Andrian was left with 28 big blinds after the hand, while Velvelt sat with nearly six times as many chips after this clash.
