Preflop, with six players remaining and blinds of 125,000-250,000 with a big blind ante of 250,000, Florian Ribouchon raised to 500,000 from under the gun. Landon Tice called from the big blind. On the flop both players checked. On the turn both players checked. On the river Tice checked, and Ribouchon bet 1,500,000. Tice folded.
It was ‘another day, another guarantee-smashing World Poker Tour main event’ at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood. The $3 million guaranteed $3,500 buy-in Rock’n’Roll Poker Open attracted 1,435 total entries to build a prize pool worth nearly $4.6 million. This hand arose at the official WPT final table, with the remaining six contenders having already locked up $140,000 by making it this far. Landon Tice was second in chips when he looked down at A-8 suited in the big blind facing a min-raise from Florian Ribouchon, who was fourth in chips and first to act preflop. Tice flopped an ace-high flush draw and opted to check from out of position on the paired board. Florian checked behind with his unimproved ace high and the turn was the 4. Tice mulled over his options before electing to continue with a pot-control approach via a check. While this passive line helps him avoid getting blown off his draw, it also prevents him from semi-bluffing his opponent off his hand. In this instance, that missed opportunity for equity denial came back to bite Tice, as Ribouchon checked behind with his gutshot and made the wheel on the river. Tice checked yet again with his unimproved ace high, prompting Ribouchon to go for an overbet. He fired 1,500,000 into 1,375,000 and Tice folded, losing only two big blinds in the hand. Ribouchon edged closer to the middle of the pack, while Tice remained in second chip position. He ultimately went on to finish fourth for $245,000 after losing most of his stack in a preflop cooler with A-K against pocket aces for Dylan Smith.
