Outcome

Preflop, with 14 players remaining and blinds of 1,000,000-2,000,000 with a big blind ante of 2,000,000, Mustapha Kanit raised to 4,000,000 from under the gun. Liv Boeree called from the big blind. On the flop both players checked. On the turn Boeree bet 5,500,000, and Kanit called. On the river Boeree bet 12,000,000, and Kanit called.

Analysis

The WSOP Paradise super main event drew nearly 2,000 players. After several days of high-stakes action, just 14 remained with a shot at the bracelet and the $6 million top prize. Those still in had locked up at least $295,000 for their efforts, and were just six knockouts away from the payouts entering seven-figure territory. This hand began with Italian tournament fixture Mustapha Kanit opening as the first to act with A-10. It folded around to Liv Boeree in the big blind, who defended the min-raise with Q-J. Boeree checked after the eight-high flop with two diamonds and Kanit, who should be the less likely of the two to have connected with this type of texture, checked behind. The turn brought the 9♥ to give Kanit an open-ended straight flush draw. It was Boeree who seized the betting lead, though, after having picked up a gutshot straight draw to go with her overcards. She fired half pot and Kanit just called, likely not wanting to raise and risk getting blown off the hand without having a chance to realize his equity. The river paired the board, which meant that both players had bricked out. “Given that it is such a natural bluff spot for Liv to start repping this board on this turn after the flop went check-check, Kanit has got a very interesting bluff catch decision, should Liv bet again,” said WSOP commentator Harry Kilbane. Boeree did indeed fire after arriving at the river with queen high. She opted to go just a bit over half pot, likely trying to fold out precisely the type of holding Kanit had in this instance, which was a solid starting hand of two big cards that had not improved on this runout. Kanit went into the tank for a bit but eventually found the correct hero call with ace high. Both players managed to move on to the final table. Boeree ultimately finished fourth for a career-best score of $2,800,000, the largest ever by a female poker player.
