Preflop: With the blinds at 5,000-10,000 with a 1,000 ante, Madsen raised to 26,000 from middle position, Quinn Do called on the button, Kim called in the big blind. On the flop, Kim checked, Madsen bet 41,000, Do folded, Kim called. On the turn, Kim bet 55,000, Madsen called. On the river, Kim checked, Madsen bet 115,000, Kim called.
Madsen bet his pocket pair on the board with only one overcard, but Kim was lurking with a check-call on the flop. Kim took the lead on the turn, protecting his hand from a possible flush or gutshot-straight draw. Madsen had picked up the gutshot draw and called Kim’s modest bet of less than a third of the pot. Madsen missed his set and straight draw, but played the ace as a scare-card on the river once Kim checked. If Kim had been drawing, and his bet on the turn had just been a defensive blocker bet for his draw, Madsen’s play on the river would have worked. Kim had a made hand however, and his check-call on the river earned him a substantial pot.
