33-Year-Old Geoghegan Victorious in Cork
Sylvester Geoghegan came through a record field of 122 to win the Irish Poker Classic at the Macau Sporting Club in Cork, in association with Betfair Poker.

In the largest tournament ever to be held in Cork, with a prize pool of €183,000, 33-year-old Geoghegan saw off top pros like Betfair.com Poker Masters of Europe champion Roy "The Boy" Brindley and UKGPT winner Michael Greco in the three-day event.

Geoghegan, who hails from Mullingar, Westmeath, came from behind at the final table to beat runner-up Shane Walshe from Limerick.

"I am delighted to win this event; the game was so friendly, we have great craic!" said Geoghegan.

With just three players remaining, a deal was struck, and Geoghegan pocketed €31,000 and more than $16,000 worth of entries into Betfair Poker's online tournaments.

1997 World Snooker Champion Ken Doherty also fared well, coming in fifth, whilst Betfair qualifiers Scott Boyle and Stewart Dobbin, both from Belfast, finished third and eighth, respectively.

Luke Leaves Fitz
Luke Ivory, the much respected cardroom manager of the Fitzwilliam Casino since its opening in 2003, has parted company with the Dublin venue.

A spokesman said: "The directors and members of the club are saddened by Luke's departure, but we wish him the very best for the future."

Two floor managers and two assistant floor managers will run the cardroom for the near future, with a replacement "likely to be appointed internally later in the year."

Meanwhile, the finishing touches are being made to the club's November Festival. It will take place Nov. 1-14, with the main event being a €1,500 no-limit hold'em tournament.
