ARod and Octuplitsby Roy Winston | Published: Feb 10, '09 |
For those of you who send me the emails telling me to only write about poker, stop reading now and wait for the next blog.
So the big news story is Alex Rodriguez used performance-enhancing drugs 6 years ago. Now the thing that really bothers me about this is why does anyone really care? Well guess what a large percentage of professional athletes and even college athletes use performance-enhancing drugs. Maybe we should focus a little more attention on our collapsing economy. I think things are at the point where we all know people who have lost jobs, houses, and major amounts of life savings. Now I understand Sports Illustrated breaking the story and ESPN going on with it, but mainstream news media needs to get a grip on what news is. I am not so naive that I don't realize the whole point of the news is to sell advertising and make a profit, but I think it has strayed way too far. What about Jose Conseco who writes a book filled with at best half truths, and is a steroid freak himself? Last year at the LA poker classic Conseco and friends showed up at the ladies event and tried to play. They were turned away, a decision which I applauded. He was supposed to fight Danny Bonaduce, the ex partridge family member who, to say the least, has had an interesting life to say the least, on pay per view. Wow, what a freak show.
The story that I think is really pathetic is the California woman, who already lives in a 2 room apartment with 6 kids, and was on public assistance, now gets invitro fertilization and has so many embryos implanted that she has octuplits. I understand that women have this maternal need that is very strong but come on, this is way too far across the line. How about the doctor that performed in fertility treatments and IVF? Usually I stick up for doctors and try and give them the benefit of the doubt, but this one needs to be looked at closely.
On a positive note at least we haven't had to hear about Paris Hilton or Britney Spears latest nonsense for a while, but I'm sure they will do something "news worthy" shortly.
