New Jersey Senators will gather today to review a bill proposing the creation of online versions of the Atlantic City casinos, from which the state would receive 20% of the annual gaming revenues.
The bill, introduced by Senator Raymond Lesniak is January, was developed with the goal of using egaming to aid the struggling racetracks and casinos of the state. Many citizens within New Jersey’s borders already play online poker, but this bill would allow residents to play games like poker, blackjack and baccarat through the intrastate egaming system, with the state collecting money from the operation to help contest the negative impact that the recession has had on the state.
The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMEGA) estimates that the egaming would generate up to $250 million in gross revenue and $50 million in taxes each year. Along with the revenue, it is expected that thousands of jobs would be created from legalizing online gaming.
Voting on the bill is expected to take place by the end of the year.
