Tom Dwan

The second installment of the Durrrr Challenge has been all Dan “jungleman12” Cates so far. However, at times, Tom “durrrr” Dwan seems to be clawing back.

The two nosebleed regulars put in several brief sessions this past Wednesday, with Dwan finishing in the black $172,000 on the day to narrow the gap to $582,788 in the contest.

One of the biggest pots of the day between the two combatants on Full Tilt Poker was a cold deck situation where Dwan improved to two pair on the end, but was no good against the rivered straight of Cates. Dwan recovered nicely from the hand and was able to turn things around to put a substantial dent into the $755,000 hole he began the day with.

Here is a look at the hand:

The Scenario:

Game/Blinds No-Limit Hold’em $200-$400
Player Tom Dwan Dan Cates
Stack Size $107,785 $62,389
Hand AHeart Suit 5Heart Suit 4Diamond Suit 3Club Suit

The Action:

The confrontation started when Cates raised to $800 from the button. Dwan called from the big blind. The flop came AClub Suit 6Spade Suit 2Heart Suit.

Dwan checked, and Cates bet $1,200. Dwan check-raised to $4,400, and Cates called. The JHeart Suit fell on the turn. Dwan checked, and Cates bet $7,400. Dwan called, and the 5Club Suit landed on the river. Dwan checked for a third time, and Cates bet $21,200. Dwan put Cates all in for about $30,000 more. Cates called with his straight, and Dwan mucked his two pair. Cates raked in the $124,778 pot.

According to Card Player’s Texas Hold’em odds calculator, Dwan wins about 93 percent of the time on the turn with his pair and flush draw.
