At one point Thursday evening it seemed Tom “durrrr” Dwan was going to even his match with Dan “jungleman12” Cates.

Dwan entered the day in the hole about $550,000, but the 24-year-old began the session on fire and soon had managed to cut the lead to just $200,000.

However, Cates held off Dwan and ended the battle in the red just $63,000. Dwan was so close to cutting down his opponent’s lead drastically, but instead finished the day still down more than $500,000 in the contest.

One of the biggest pots of the entire challenge occurred during Thursday’s session, thanks to a cold deck situation where Dwan improved to two pair on the turn, but was no good against the straight of Cates.

Here is a look at the hand:

The Scenario:

Game/Blinds No-Limit Hold’em $200-$400
Player Dan Cates Tom Dwan
Stack Size $105,191 $199,076
Hand 8Heart Suit 7Heart Suit 9Heart Suit 5Heart Suit

The Action:

The confrontation started when Dwan raised to $1,200 from the button. Cates three-bet to $5,200 from the big blind, and Dwan four-bet to $14,500. Cates called, and the flop came 9Spade Suit 6Spade Suit 3Diamond Suit. Cates checked, and Dwan bet $17,800. Cates called. The 5Diamond Suit fell on the turn. Cates checked, and Dwan put his opponent all in for about $73,000. Cates called with his nut straight.

Both players elected to run it twice, with the 4Diamond Suit and the 2Diamond Suit falling on separate rivers. Dwan failed to improve to a full house, and Cates raked in the $210,381 pot.

According to Card Player’s Texas Hold’em odds calculator, Cates wins about 90 percent of the time on the turn with his straight in this cooler situation.
