Cal State Poker Championship LogoThe Commerce Casino’s California State Poker Championship tournament series began on May 4, and through the first two days of the $220 no-limit hold’em opening event 1,054 players have entered. The first tournament offers a $400,000 guarantee; which is part of the more than $1.5 million in guaranteed prize money that will be up for grabs during the tournament series. There will also be a $125-buy in, $300,000 turbo no-limit hold’em event with a $100,000 first-place prize.

The 19-day tournament series leads up to the $2,575 buy-in Cal State Poker Championship on Friday, May 20, which features a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool. Players can win their way into the main event in one of the nightly super satellites starting at $120 that offer a guaranteed seat.

Last year Los Angeles’ Patrick Karschamroon was crowned the Cal State Poker Champion, beating professionals Gavin Griffin and John Cernuto at the final table.

Commerce Casino has also planned several $335 mega satellite events, including three on Thursday, May 19, that will give players a shot at the Golden Bear trophy and the title of Cal State Poker Classic champion.

“The Cal State Poker Classic is always a favorite with both locals and out-of-towners who come here to stake their claim for poker gold,” said Tournament Director Matt Savage. “Each year this event provides a great payday for some and a powerful career boost for others. May at Commerce is definitely where the action is in poker.”

The preliminary event lineup will feature three new events conceived by Savage:

- All-In or Fold (Tuesday, May 10 at 5 p.m., $120 buy-in): This wild event is destined to get everyone talking! You have only the two choices-on EVERY hand! It has a $25,000 guarantee and $100,000 for first place?

- THE ETERN-AMENT (Tuesday, May 17 at 2 p.m. $335 buy-in): This two-day event has two-hour levels and a $50,000-guarantee. The blinds go up more steeply, but at a much slower pace. There’s a $2,575 seat in the main event for the winner.

- Reverse Turbo (Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. $335 buy-in): With the slogan “It’s not as fast as you think,” this event, which also features a $50,000 guarantee, has 15-minute levels! But the blinds will be increased only marginally.

Other events scheduled at the World’s Largest Poker Casino as part of the Cal State slate include:

- A $50,000-guaranteed $220 buy-in knockout bounty event, awarding $50 for each player you eliminate, and a $1,575 buy-in knockout bounty event, with a $500 price on each head.

- A $100,000 guaranteed $335 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament with a seat in the main event for the victor. Plus a $50,000 guarantee, $220 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament, and a $50,000 guarantee, $220 buy-in turbo no-limit hold’em tournament.

- A $50,000 guaranteed $335 buy-in Omaha eight-or-better tournament.

To round out the competition, players will also find double stacks, H.O.R.S.E and six-handed no-limit hold’em.
