Mark Schmid Wins Latest $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em Event at 2011 World Series of Poker

Poker Pro Wins First WSOP Bracelet and $488K

The 2011 World Series of Poker has a new $1,000 no-limit hold’em champion in poker pro Mark Schmid. The Michigan native took down his first major live tournament for a massive score of $488,000, after outlasting a field of 3,144 over the course of three days of play.

The final table was grueling, as action went into the wee hours of Wednesday morning. Schmid, who came into the final table with a large chip lead, eventually fell off the top spot during the extensive battle. However, the 31-year-old remained resilient en route to winning one of the biggest live poker tournaments the world has ever seen.

Jeremy Kottler Eliminated in 9th Place ($36,473)Jeremy Kottler

Jeremy Kottler open-shoved the button for 330,000 before the flop and Jonathan Clancy called from the big blind.

Clancy lead with AClub Suit JDiamond Suit against Kottler’s AHeart Suit 2Heart Suit.

The board came JSpade Suit 8Club Suit 6Heart Suit 3Club Suit 7Heart Suit, giving Clancy top pair on the flop to win the pot. Jeremy Kottler was the first one eliminated in 9th place ($36,473).

Michael Souza Eliminated in 8th Place ($47,622)

Michael Souza open-shoved for 410,000 before the flop and Mark Schmid called from the big blind.

Souza turned over 3Diamond Suit 3Club Suit while Schmid showed KHeart Suit QClub Suit.

The board came 7Spade Suit 4Club Suit 2Club Suit QDiamond Suit 9Diamond Suit, giving Schmid top pair on the turn to win the pot. Michael Souza was eliminated in 8th place ($47,622).

Robbie VerspuiRobbie Verspui Eliminated in 7th Place ($62,873)

Andrew Rudnik opened for 125,000 before the flop, Robbie Verspui moved all in and Rudnik called.

Rudnik lead with ASpade Suit ADiamond Suit against Verspui’s AHeart Suit JClub Suit.

The board came JHeart Suit 7Diamond Suit4Club Suit QClub Suit 5Diamond Suit, giving Verspui a jack on the flop, but he failed to improve by the river and was eliminated in 7th place ($62,873).

Benjamin Volpe Eliminated in 6th Place ($83,925)

Benjamin Volpe open-shoved for 735,000 before the flop and Jonathan Clancy called from the small blind.

Clancy lead with with ASpade Suit AClub Suit against Volpe’s QSpade Suit JSpade Suit.

The board came JHeart Suit 8Heart Suit 6Spade Suit 4Heart Suit 2Diamond Suit, giving Volpe a pair on the flop, but he failed to improve by the river and was eliminated in 6th place ($83,925).

Trevor VanderveenTrevor Vanderveen Eliminated in 5th Place ($113,297)

Jonathan Clancy doubled through Trever Vanderveen earlier in the level, knocking him down to about 1.3 million. Shortly after, Vanderveen three-bet shoved all in for about 1,000,000 before the flop with ASpade Suit JHeart Suit and was called by Justin Cohen’s QSpade Suit QClub Suit.

The board came KSpade Suit 8Diamond Suit 7Heart Suit 2Heart Suit 6Spade Suit, no help for Treveor Vanderveen who was eliminated in 5th place ($11,297). Justin Cohen went on to take the chip lead that hand with roughly 3.3 million.

Jonathan Clancy Eliminated in 4th Place ($154,722)

Jonathan Clancy open-shoved the short stack for 700,000 before the flop and Justin Cohen called.

Clancy had the lead with JDiamond Suit JClub Suit while Cohen had a draw with KDiamond Suit QHeart Suit.

The board came 9Diamond Suit 8Diamond Suit 3Spade Suit KSpade Suit 3Diamond Suit, giving Cohen top pair on the turn to win the pot. Jonathan Clancy was eliminated in 4th Place ($154,722).

Andrew Rudnik Eliminated in 3rd Place ($213,747)Andrew Rudnik

Justin Cohen button-raised to 200,000 before the flop, Andrew Rudnik reraised to 800,000 from the big blind, Cohen shoved and Rudnik called all in.

Rudnik’s JHeart Suit JDiamond Suit was ahead of Cohen’s AHeart Suit KSpade Suit.

The board came ASpade Suit KClub Suit 10Club Suit 6Heart Suit 4Heart Suit, giving Cohen top pair on the flop to win the pot. Andrew Rudnik was eliminated in 3rd place ($213,747) and heads-up play between Justin Cohen and Mark Schmid began shortly after. With the elimination of Andrew Rudnik in 3rd place, Mark Schmid took the chip lead going into heads-up play with 5,620,000 to Justin Cohen’s 3,810,000.

Justin Cohen Eliminated in 2nd Place ($302,031)

Mark Schmid completed the small blind and Justin Cohen checked the big blind.

The flop came KSpade Suit 10Spade Suit 7Heart Suit and both players checked.

The turn was the 7Spade Suit, and once again both players checked.

The river was the ASpade Suit, Cohen checked, Schmid bet 450,000, Cohen check-raised all in and Schmid called.

Cohen turned over JHeart Suit 7Club Suit for trip sevens on the turn, but Schmid showed QSpade Suit QClub Suit for a flush on the river to win the pot. Justin Cohen was eliminated in 2nd place ($302,031) while Mark Schmid wins the gold bracelet in Event #34 and the $488,283 grand prize.
