The Bodog.com Marketing Conference scheduled to begin today in Las Vegas has been postponed due to concern over the fact that a CEO of an online sports book was arrested in Texas last week.
"Bodog was receiving lots of calls from would-be conference attendees who are expressing a high level of concern over the uncertainty surrounding the U.S. government's recent actions against a company in our industry," said Calvin Ayre, Bodog's founder and CEO. "It is in light of these concerns that we have decided to postpone the Bodog.com Marketing Conference to a later date and at an international location."
David Carruthers, CEO of BETonSPORTS, was arrested at the Dallas airport last Sunday and is being held in federal custody. His lawyer asked that his bail hearing be postponed on Friday. Carruthers is being charged with racketeering, conspiracy, transmission of wagers, tax evasion, and other charges.
In a letter sent to conference delegates, Ayre wrote: "The actions taken by the authorities have nothing to do with our organization; we are simply acting prudently for all concerned. We will continue to lead the way in digital entertainment."
The conference was to include speakers from all facets of the online gaming industry. The party, scheduled for Tuesday, will go on as planned. A new place or date has yet to be determined.
