Van ManlambusThe 2012 LA Poker Classic kicked off at the Commerce Casino with two small buy-in events that produced sizable prizepools as a result of absolutely massive turnouts. Both tournaments featured multiple starting days and allowed players who busted out to re-enter on one of the following starting days.

The first event of the series was a $65 buy-in no-limit hold’em event with a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool. That seemingly lofty goal was demolished, as the event eventually drew a total of 3,333 entrants over the four starting days, creating a $166,650 prizepool. In the end the champion was Van Rowin Manlambus of Oxnard, California. For his win he earned $14,365 as a result of a five-way chop based on the chip counts at the time. The five remaining played it out, with Manlambus emerging victorious.

Seyed EdalatThe second event of the series was a $340 buy-in no-limit hold’em event with a $1 million guaranteed prizepool. A total of 3,234 players entered over the five starting days, but at the end of the event, the man with the lion’s share of the seven-figure prizepool was Seyed Edalat of San Jose, California. Edalat was the official winner after a ten-way deal was struck, earning the largest payout of $113,560.

2012 marks the 20th running of the LAPC, which will play host to 50 events in total, featuring a variety of games and buy-ins. Of those, 23 events qualify for Card Player Player of the Year points.

The centerpiece of this celebrated series is the $10,000 World Poker Tour L.A. Poker Classic Main Event, which will get underway on February 24th. Some of poker’s biggest names have won this event in previous years, including Gus Hansen, Michael Mizrachi, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Ivey.
