Spain is expected to be fully open for online gaming including poker in March or April this year after it brought forward the deadline for awarding licences to March 31.

It has received approximately 60 applications including from notable market leaders such as Betfair, Ladbrokes, bwin.party, Paddy Power, 888, and Bet365 but analyst Daniel Stewart & Co. warned today that, “However the sudden change in deadline could catch some operators offside and not prepared for the market opening.”

The analyst, Michael Campbell, believes the size of the online gaming market in the country could double after regulation to become the third largest in Europe worth around €800 million and says it prefers stocks which have an already established brand or market position in Spain including Sportingbet (Miapuesta) owner of Paradise Poker and bwin.party, owner of Party Poker, which are both in the top three online gaming brands.
