Irish Deaf Poker’s Super Deaf Poker Event is taking place this evening (Feb. 24) in Dublin’s City West Hotel, Saggart. An estimated 70 poker players who are either deaf, hard of hearing, friends of deaf who can sign, sing language students, or basically any poker player who can sign are expected to make the trip to this event which has been a long time in the making.

Joining them are 15-25 hearing players who will have minimal signs. Ninehanded tables will each feature two or three hearing players. A video produced by the Irish Deaf Poker presented by Julianne Gillen (see below) was released last month in an attempt to teach those who don’t know sign language a thing or two to get them by. The trophy and a small cash prize will be retained for the last deaf player standing, if he/she is not the outright champion.

The event is sign language only with the rule that if any player at the table has live cards in front of them, only sign language may be used. Dealers will talk and sign the action as it happens, and only when there are no cards in play at the table is talking allowed. If the rule is broken, a verbal warning may be given. Repeated offences will get a penalty such as a €5 donation to the Ethiopian Deaf Charity box or the player will have to sit out for a certain number of hands determined by the tournament director.

Players sit down at 7.30 p.m. to a starting stack of 10,000 in chips and 20-minute blinds kicking off at 25-50. There will be a 30-minute break after five levels. The blinds were shortened by five minutes as some players will be playing the Super Poker Event of Europe 2012 tomorrow (Saturday). This event is expected to attract more than 1,000 players, therefore an exciting buzz is expected around City West this evening with the Super Deaf Poker Event 2012 running on into the early hours of the debut of the Super Poker Event of Europe.
