The run of World Series of Poker main event champions affiliated with online poker site PokerStars ended when Jamie Gold took home the $12 million and a very nice bracelet, but players who qualified for WSOP events through PokerStars still did incredibly well.
Close to 20 percent of the entire main event playing field of 8,773 players qualified at PokerStars.com. Altogether, 1,623 members of the PokerStars team participated in the main event, and throughout the entire series, players who got in the events through PokerStars earned more than $21 million in 46 WSOP events.
WSOP champions Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer both qualified for the main event through PokerStars, and last year's champion, Joe Hachem, signed with the site soon after he won the main event. He said he's played at PokerStars since 2001. Hachem didn't qualify for the main event through PokerStars, though.
In 2005, PokerStars sent 1,116 players to the main event
Three PokerStars qualifiers made the main event's final table this year. Doug Kim finished seventh and earned $2,391,520, Erik Friberg finished eighth and won $1,979,189, and Dan Nassif finished ninth and won $1,566,858.
More than half of the players who participated in the WSOP's main event this year qualified through online sites. In the last three years, PokerStars has sent more players to the WSOP than any other online poker site.
